Getting Real - July 2016
In May, I was fired up to finish the rough draft of my book by the end of June. Then, June actually happened and I had to get real.
Getting real, as you know, is honesty. I recently wrote a chapter about honesty for my book, because it is one of the essential practices of universal spirituality. I had big ambitions for working several hours a week to complete a handful of the remaining chapters and revise several others.
But as soon as my daughter was out of school, I had to be honest with myself - there were more important things at hand. Her dance recital, in three shows over two days. A trip to Mt. Shasta, filled with unexpected wonders. Unpack and wash, then pack up again for her nature camp, just for mothers and daughters. June had 4 days left and I was wiped out – in no shape for digging into my notebook and pen or hours at the computer.
Yep, I got real. Right now was the time to be in the moment and enjoy this precious time with my family. To soak in the waters of Stewart Mineral Springs and then take a cold plunge in the creek; my daughter anxious at first but exhilarated as she emerged, dripping and delighted. Joining her in sit-spot on a stump amongst a grove of redwoods, listening to the birds. A family day in Monterey: from the wonders of the aquarium; to the seashore, picking up seaglass; then a roaring fire in the lodge of Asilomar. The book is still in me. Right now we need to be here, present together.
I trust that process – to let go and follow the flow. To get Real, and remember what matters the most to me right now. I won’t put it aside for long; the summer doesn’t last forever.
However, I didn’t put aside my calling to teach again. Spirit has spoken, and I have two offerings to announce…
Monthly Morning Yoga & Meditation (MMYM) begins this month on Friday, July 15th, in Palo Alto from 9:45-11:45am! I’d love to see you there as we immerse in this sacred time together of practice, discussion, and going within. See details below or on my website.
Mark your calendars - the Fall Day-Long Retreat is coming! Join me at Ananda Valley Farm again on Saturday, October 15th, from 9:30am-5:30pm for a day of Letting Go, the perfect theme for autumn. Registration opens later this month – look for a separate announcement.
And remember that I am offering a free yoga philosophy class at the Yoga Expo this month on Sunday, July 24th at 1:10pm. Free with all-day admission to the Expo – check it out!
Perhaps there is something you had on your list to do, but it’s time to put aside for a bit. The balance is delicate between addressing the demands of "to-dos" and enjoying what life offers you in the moment. In your heart, you’ll know where to put your focus. Don’t fret if you're called to put the list aside and just be. The Divine will tap you on the shoulder again when the time comes to resume.
